Lismore is beautifully sited in the Blackwater Valley at the foot of the Knockmealdown Mountains. The town was the site of the 7th Century Monastery founded by St. Carthage, which became one of the most renowned Universities of Europe.
The village is dominated by Lismore Castle, built on a cliff over hanging the Blackwater in 1185 by King John of England. Lismore Castle was the birthplace of the "Father of Modern Chemistry" Sir Robert Boyle (Boyle's Law). In 1753 it was passed on to the fourth Duke of Devonshire and has been the family Irish seat since.
Lismore is a place where you can relax and enjoy a stroll on any of the signposted walks in and around the town taking in the charm of its fine collection of 18th and 19th century buildings.
The Vee DriveA former local landowner, Samuel Grubb, liked the view so much that he arranged to be buried here, standing upright, so that he could gaze forever at this beautiful scene.
