Dungarvan is the gateway to the enchanting mountainous area of West Wateford. A busy market town and an excellent holiday centre situated on Dungarvan Harbour where the River Colligan enters the sea.
It is recorded that about the 3rd century A.D., a tribe called the Déise settled on the site where Dungarvan now stands and the place is still referred to as the Decies.
Dungarvan derives from St. Garvan who founded a monastery in the 7th century. Norman Prince John came here in 1185 and had fortifications built. The remains of Dungarvan Castle, which was built by him, are being restored at the moment.
In Abbeyside, a village outside Dungarvan, lie the ruins of the Augustinian Priory founded in the 13th Century. The 50 feet high Square Tower was adapted as a Belfry for the adjoining Church.
On the west side of Dungarvan bay in County Waterford, lies one of the last Gaelic speaking outposts; Gaeltacht na Rinne. The language survives as do the other traditions, notably traditional music and set dancing.
Clonea beach, with its soft golden sand and less than two miles from the centre of town, deserves particular mention. Deep-sea and in-shore angling are particularly good in the Dungarvan area and fully equipped boats are available to catch cod, coalfish, conger, ling, mackerel, shark and pollock. There is course fishing nearby for salmon and trout, but if you don't want to catch them yourself, try sampling them in one of the many acclaimed pubs, restaurants or hotels. Not only does Dungarvan offer much to see and do, it is an ideal springboard to enjoy spectacular seascapes, green placid river valleys and wild, rugged heather-covered mountains.
